no matter if you stay R12 or convert to R134a. Your compressor and lines will work fine with R134a. The Throttle Suction Valve, however, is calibrated for R12. In order to get the full cooling capability of the system when switching to R134a, you'll need to gut the Throttle Suction Valve and install a thermostatic switch to prevent evaporator freeze-up. I've been meaning to do a writeup on this...hopefully before it gets hot again.
